Both “The Human Factor” and Cat’s Cradle show that technology can cause a lot of disaster and tragedy in the world. Technology is very helpful and it makes so many things in life a lot easier to do. But it can be a bad thing at times as well. The human factor should be considered while new technology is being made because if a person cannot figure out how to use technology, then that device is not going to be helpful even if it is capable of doing so much.
The plan for the Chrenobyl catastrophe failed because they left an untrained worker to deal with the equipment (9). Something can be planned out and seem flawless but if the person running it does not know how to properly use the equipment, it’s not going to work. This also shows that carelessness is a cause for things that go wrong with technology.
In Cat’s Cradle, ice nine was the invention created by Dr. Felix Hoenikker. It seemed that Hoenikker wanted to create ice-nine just to prove that he could do it (50). He wanted to be known for his scientific accomplishments and that ice nine could be used as a gift to mankind, but Hoenikker did not reveal this invention to anyone but his children(50). He probably knew the danger that is could cause but he did not warn his children. He left it up to them to decide what would happen with the ice-nine that was created. Hoenikker’s invention ended up being the cause of death for most things on earth.
Both Vonnegut and Vincete show that we will never be content with what we have. In Cat’s cradle the characters were searching for happiness. In the Human Factor, Vincente states that technology is something that is used to make life easier, such as a work schedule (24). Yet technology has become so advanced and high tech, that someday most people won’t even be able to understand how to use it.
Both readings show that technology can get so out of hand that eventually, it could destroy the world. But technology wouldn’t be at fault for the tragedy. Someone has to come up with ideas and follower through with the ideas in order for technology to be created.

For your final draft, try to give some back round info on the stories, also try to put in some concrete quotes instead of summarizing it into your own words.
ReplyDeleteDr. Hoenikker left ice-nine to his children, how did they choose to use it? How should they have used it? If ice-nine were created today would people use it the same way or would they think of the consequences before hand? Also explain what ice-nine is.
Think about adding how technology fits in your life. If you find that most technology is hard to figure out-if so what technology?
I think you touched many good points, now you just need to expand on them a little more. Try to go a little deeper and not just stay on the surface. Give your opinion on technology.
The last thought I have is: Has technology gotten abused throughout the years? If so, is that why so many of us struggle to keep up with the ever-growing technological world?
I like the use of the Chernobyl incident to show the ideas behind the Vicente’s book and it goes well with your main point. Your second to last paragraph seems like it could be really good and helps tie together your main points from the whole paper, but its really short. If your can get into the work schedule topic from “The Human Factor” then I think it could help to show how something that simple could have such a big effect. This was a solid essay, but maybe finish up the last paragraph with a few more good points for your final essay.
ReplyDeletewhen you say "Both Vonnegut and Vincete show that we will never be content with what we have," you kind of just leave it at that, while not really explaining what exactly you mean by it, or in which ways you believe that show those things. I like the point you made with the Chernobyl incident, however it doesn't really flow well with the rest of the essay and looks kind of thrown in.
ReplyDeleteYour essay uses good expamples like chernobyl and ice-nine and your opening paragraph is good. Your closing paragraph is also good. Your paper could use a lot more background information along with supporting details that supports your thoughts. using quotes is a good way to back up your ideas. Another thing that your paper needs is more length because it has to be 3 pages long. your paper is kind of hard to follow because it bounces around all over.
